How photographers get clients: a 90-day plan

How your buyer buys: High price, long deliberation. The buyer decides on proof of past work.

A couple planning a wedding enquires with five photographers in one evening. They found you on Hitched, on Instagram or on the venue's supplier list, with the date already fixed. The reply within the hour that says the date is free, followed by three collections that evening, is the one still on the shortlist a fortnight later.

Family, newborn and headshot clients buy faster and book more than once. They want a page for their session type with ten images and a from-price, and a way to book and pay the deposit online without an email exchange. They come back a year later if you remind them, and they bring the friend who asked who took the photos.

So the phone text-back, the profile and the review within 48 hours of the gallery come first. Then the one-hour reply, the three collections and online booking for sessions. Then the venue galleries and the recommended supplier lists, a page per session type, and the autumn mini sessions with a fixed number of slots.

Step zero

The free checklist, before the plan.

The checklist repairs what you already have: the phone, the profile, the booking path. This page is the plan for new work on top of it, and the two are different jobs.

Where they look

Where your customers actually look.

  • Hitched(opens in a new tab)

The largest UK wedding directory. Couples filter by region and read reviews, so a listing with a named venue in every review and a from-price wins the shortlist.

  • Bridebook(opens in a new tab)

Couples plan the whole wedding here with the budget set. A profile with real weddings at the venues they are considering reaches them at the moment they are choosing.

  • Venue recommended supplier lists

The strongest listing has no search box. Send each coordinator a gallery of their venue for their own site, and ask to join the list they hand to every couple.

  • Instagram(opens in a new tab)

Where a couple checks the work after a recommendation. Frames from each wedding, the venue tagged, and the florist and planner credited, so their followers see you too.

  • Guild of Photographers

A professional body with a member directory and awards. The badge reassures the couple and the corporate headshot client who want a professional rather than a friend with a camera.

  • Google Business Profile(opens in a new tab)

Wedding photographer and family photographer with the town end here. Category Photographer with the secondary that fits, each shoot type listed, and frames added monthly.

Your year

When the phone rings, and when to start.

Weddings run May to September; the winter is quiet for shoots but is when many couples book.

  1. Jan: quiet
  2. Feb: quiet, start the visibility work
  3. Mar
  4. Apr
  5. May: peak
  6. Jun: peak
  7. Jul: peak
  8. Aug: peak
  9. Sep: peak
  10. Oct
  11. Nov
  12. Dec

Amber months are the peak, grey months are quiet, and "start" marks the month the visibility work has to begin in.

  • May to September peak: start by February, because local search takes about three months to move.

Weddings run May to September, and the diary is full of shoots. The booking season is the other half of the year: couples get engaged over Christmas and enquire in January and February, which are the quiet months for shoots. Search needs a quarter to pick up the profile, the session pages and the venue galleries, so the work for the wedding season starts in February, while the camera is quiet. In September, announce autumn mini sessions with a fixed number of slots and the last date for Christmas prints. Through the winter, tell enquirers how many Saturdays remain for next summer and update the number as they book.

The cost of waiting

What doing nothing costs photographers.

The leaks below are the ones the photographers page already names. Put a figure on each, see what the fix gets back a month, and how many weeks the kit or the bundle takes to pay for itself.

Industry estimates, not client results

Industry-typical ranges for a working photographer: weddings in the low thousands blended with portrait and event work in the hundreds, about three in ten enquiries booking, and a minority returning for a second shoot within the year.

Every number below is prefilled from that estimate and editable. Put your own figures in and the leaks, gains and payback recalculate as you type.

What matters most

The levers that carry the most weight here.

A photographer's year turns on four steps. The reply within the hour that the date is free, with the collections that evening and a nudge at three days, one week and two, because couples enquire with five at once. Three collections, ceremony to first dance up to the full day with a second shooter and an album, so the question becomes which. The venue coordinators, each sent a gallery of their room and asked for a place on the supplier list, which sends couples for years. And real deadlines: the Saturdays left for next summer, the mini session slots, the last date for Christmas prints. Online booking with a deposit for sessions runs beside those.
