I'm Steffen. I help UK small businesses grow online.
I built Voll after years of working on the other side of small-business growth, as a co-founder, as a partner, and as the operator who actually has to make the website, the CRM, and the marketing do their jobs. This page is the short version of how I got here and what I now do for clients.

How I got here.
I read Physics at Oxford. Not because I had a neat plan for what to do with it, but because I liked problems that had a right answer and a wrong answer, and I liked the work of getting from one to the other. That habit of looking at a messy situation, breaking it into smaller pieces, and checking the maths before trusting the story has stuck with me ever since. It is, quietly, still how I approach every client project.
After Oxford, I spent a few years on RBS's Sales and Trading desk. Interesting work, but the most useful thing I took from it was watching how real companies operated behind the curtain of their numbers. You learn very quickly that the businesses that survive are not always the ones with the cleverest idea. They are the ones with a clear offer, a tight operation, and someone at the top who actually understands where the money comes from and where it goes.
I co-founded Kodin in the early 2010s. We built fintech infrastructure that was eventually acquired by Platform One in 2018. That was my first full run of building a company from zero to sale, and the first time I saw how brutal and how rewarding small-company operations really are. You wear every hat. You fix your own website at 11pm. You answer your own support tickets. You learn, in a very personal way, which bits of marketing and systems actually move the needle and which bits just look busy.
Then I spent years as Partner, CTO, and COO at Ecommerce Accountants, scaling it from a small practice into a modern firm. I built the whole digital side from scratch, the website, the CRM, automation, marketing, SEO, operations, and the internal systems that held it all together. That is the playbook I now bring to every Voll client. Not a framework I read about. A set of things I have personally built, broken, rebuilt, and watched generate real revenue.
Alongside that I qualified as a Chartered Wealth Manager with the CISI, because I wanted to be properly trained on the financial side of how small businesses behave, not just the marketing side. Most agencies talk about leads. I care more about whether those leads actually turn into sustainable profit for the owner sitting across the table, because that is the number they go home and worry about.
Voll is where all of that comes together. One person, who has actually built, scaled, and sold businesses, helping other UK small businesses do the same thing at a far smaller scale and a much lower cost. I am not a theorist. I am not a generalist marketer. I understand the operational reality of running a small business, because I have lived it.
What I believe about growing a small business.
Small businesses rarely need more tools. They need fewer tools used better. I see owners every month who are paying for four CRMs, three email platforms, and a social scheduler they have not logged into since January. The win is almost never another subscription. The win is picking the right handful of things and actually using them properly, week after week.
The marketing world tends to over-complicate. Most small businesses can grow steadily with a solid website, a claimed Google Business Profile, a working CRM, and a monthly email that actually goes out. That is genuinely it for most of the companies I work with. Nothing exotic, no funnel diagrams with nineteen steps, no AI growth hacks. Just the basics, done consistently and honestly.
You do not have to like marketing to be good at it. You just have to show up, tell the truth about what you do, and make it easy for the right people to find you. Most of the owners I admire would rather talk about their craft than their brand, and that is actually a strength. My job is to translate that straight-talking expertise into a website and a presence that the right customers can find and trust.
Modern tools, old-fashioned judgement.
I use modern AI tools the same way a builder uses a nail gun. It is not about automation replacing quality. It is about doing in days what used to take months, so the cost to you goes down, and the attention I can give to the bits that need judgement goes up. You will not see any of that from your side. You will just see the work land faster and feel more considered.

Based in
London, with Nordic roots. Voll is taken from my surname, Hoyemsvoll. In Norwegian, a voll is a raised bank or field, the kind of place with a clear view of what is around. Not a bad metaphor for what a small business owner needs from the person helping them grow.
