How driving instructors get pupils: a 90-day plan

How your buyer buys: Modest price, bought again and again. Retention is the whole economics.

A seventeen-year-old does not find a driving instructor. Their parent does, by asking the town Facebook group and by looking at who their friends' children passed with. The parent checks the DVSA register, reads the pass-day reviews, wants to know manual or automatic and the price of a block, and messages on WhatsApp rather than phoning.

Once a pupil starts, the diary is the business. Lessons sold one at a time are resold every week, and a cancelled lesson is an hour nobody else can fill. The 10-hour block after lesson two, the reminder 24 hours ahead and a cancellation policy stated in the first payment message turn a weekly negotiation into a term of booked hours.

So rebook, remind and the Check availability button come first. Then the profile with the test centres you cover, the review link texted in the test centre car park, and published prices for manual and automatic. Then the Facebook group replies, the roof sign and door lettering, and the pass-day question about friends turning seventeen.

The checklist repairs what you already have: the phone, the profile, the booking path. This page is the plan for new work on top of it, and the two are different jobs.

Where they look

Where your customers actually look.

  • GOV.UK find a driving instructor

Learners are told to check that an instructor is approved. Your entry on the DVSA list, with the right postcode area and your current name, is the check a parent runs before they message.

  • Driving Instructors Association

The trade body with a public member search, insurance and a code of conduct. A membership line beside the DVSA badge settles the question for the cautious parent.

  • Google Business Profile(opens in a new tab)

Driving instructor near me and the test centre name are the searches. Category Driving school, home address hidden, a service area of the towns and test centres you cover, and pass photos posted weekly.

  • Local Facebook town and parent groups

Where the parent asks first. Reply with manual or automatic, the test centres you cover and your waiting list date, and post the pass photo of the week.

Your year

When the phone rings, and when to start.

Summer holidays bring intensive courses and pupils fresh from exams; December is the thin month.

Amber months are the peak, grey months are quiet, and "start" marks the month the visibility work has to begin in.

  • June to August peak: start by March, because local search takes about three months to move.

Summer is the peak. June to August brings intensive courses, pupils fresh from exams with free weekdays, and parents who want a pass before university. Reviews, the profile and the published prices need three months to show, so the work for summer starts in March. December is the thin month, with dark evenings, holidays and tests cancelled for ice, so use it to text paused pupils and to set up the reminders and the block pricing. Pupils turn seventeen all year, and a full diary with a waiting list runs through the quiet weeks. On every pass day, ask about friends and siblings; that question fills next spring.

The cost of waiting

What doing nothing costs driving instructors.

The leaks below are the ones the driving instructors page already names. Put a figure on each, see what the fix gets back a month, and how many weeks the kit or the bundle takes to pay for itself.

Industry estimates, not client results

Industry-typical ranges for a solo driving instructor: a lesson priced in the tens of pounds, most enquirers starting, and a learner taking around thirty further lessons before a test.

Every number below is prefilled from that estimate and editable. Put your own figures in and the leaks, gains and payback recalculate as you type.

Baseline revenue on these figures: £4,727 a month, counting this month's new customers and a twelfth of their repeat business, plus a month of spend from the regulars below.

Your regular clients

Around fifteen pupils on the books at about one and a half lessons a week, with roughly one in twenty stopping before their test in a typical month. Passes are a natural end and are not counted as lost.

£908 a month leaking

Fixing every leak above gets back about £427 a month, with each leak counted on its own against the same baseline, regulars kept included.

The Block-Booked Diary System (£1,695)
Pays back in 17.2 weeks
The Driving Instructor Growth Kit (£49)
Pays back in under a week

On these figures the bundle takes longer than 13 weeks (90 days) to pay back for driving instructors. The fields above are there to check that against your own numbers, which are the ones that count.

What matters most

The levers that carry the most weight here.

An instructor's diary is built on four steps. The 10-hour block, offered after lesson two with next week's slot agreed before the pupil gets out of the car, because a term of booked hours beats a weekly resell. The review link texted in the test centre car park on pass day, when the pupil will write anything, with the test centre named. Published prices for the hour and the block, manual and automatic, on the site and the profile. And the roof sign and door lettering, readable from the car behind, in every pass photo. Facebook group replies and the pass-day referral ask run alongside, and the motorway lesson after the pass brings a past pupil back once more.
